The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an orthodontic evaluation at the age of 7. This is the recommended age because typically the first of the adult teeth appear, and when some of the more important problems of dental development can require treatment. Treatment for young children is usually aimed at dealing with functional problems that immediately threaten the health of the teeth. The conditions that we treat in early childhood are problems of tooth eruption, crossbite, overcrowding, jaw growth problems, snoring, thumb sucking, tongue thrust and open bite.
Orthodontic issues can develop very early in childhood, which is why early treatment is important for a number of specific conditions to prevent damage to the adult teeth or to limit the effects of a developing growth problem. One of our guiding principles at Bailey Orthodontics is to keep the amount of treatment required to produce a great smile to an absolute minimum. For more information on orthodontic treatment for children, click here to visit our website or give us a call.
Welcome to the orthodontic office of Bailey Orthodontics, PC, where we provide orthodontic solutions to suit your lifestyle and personal preferences. We strive to help patients of all ages achieve beautiful, healthy, confident smiles!

The Bitter Truth About Sweets
Not only is maintaining proper oral hygiene important to your dental health while having braces but what you eat is important too. Sugar is the ingredient for all sweet treats, and as good as that sounds it is actually harmful to your teeth.
How is sugar harmful?
Sugar particles spark overproduction of acid in our mouths and creating tooth decay. Acid breaks down enamel in teeth causing erosion that can cause pain and cause teeth to become very sensitive. The more sugar in your mouth, the more acid that is produced, and the bigger problem you have.
In addition to being harmful oral health, when eating lots of sweet treats while having braces you may find that your teeth have white spots. Those whites sports are called decalcification. When sugar is left on the teeth you can be left with a buildup of grim under your braces, thus causing white spots called decalcification. And those white spots may take a while to fade away. So it is important to limit the sugar in your diet, which includes candy, treats and sugary drinks.
Examples of sugary treats and drinks:
Remember you want healthy teeth after your braces are off, so consume sugar moderately and always brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after the consumption of sugar.

Are You Going Back To School With Braces?
Caring for braces especially for students in school can be quiet hectic due to the restrictive devotions to maintain the braces and for this reason, Bailey Orthodontics has decided to put up an article which will make caring for orthodontic braces easy in school. As a student who just had an orthodontic treatment, you should be rest assured that it is the best that can happen to give you the perfect smile again but the care for your teeth and gums help make it very effective. Take a look at your new braces, you can notice a lot of nooks and crannies that can trap food and plaque and that means a great risk of tooth decay is imminent if not properly cared for, therefore you need to pay special attention to cleaning your teeth. This might look hectic but right here the team of Bailey Orthodontics has few great tips to keep your braces in top condition.
1. WATCH YOUR DIET
As an orthodontic patient with braces, it is very important for you to select your diet with caution. We know that there are several foods in school which tastes great but don't look great in your braces. Certain foods can either break a bracket or some foods are sugary and can have negative effects on the natural ability to brush behind the bracket. Be sure to make decisions on foods based on what is healthy, tasty, and won't harm your brackets.
Food to avoid: As an orthodontic patient we would advise that you desist from:
With braces on your teeth, you might be wondering if you should desist from sports or retire from being the captain of your favorite sports team, but the truth is orthodontics does not affect your ability to play sports. You can keep on with your braces and sports if and only if you have your mouth guard on. Mouth guards are safety measures that can mean the difference between just a bruised, fat lips and thousands spent in orthodontics repair work. While you are in any kind of physical activity (including gym classes), it is advisable that you wear a mouth guard which can protect your teeth and braces from flying sports balls, swinging elbows or an accidental fall or hit.
3. BRUSH AND FLOSS REGULARLY
Braces can easily trap food, and this trapped food can lead to other inimical dental problems. Because of this, it is very important to brush your teeth after every meal and to floss at least once a day.
4. DON'T CHEW ON PENCILS
Pencils, pen, and rulers are all hard objects and most times when you get bored, anxious or plainly destructive you are tempted to chew on them in class. Obviously, this can be destructive in the moment and can be grossly inimical over time. It is important that you don't practice these habits while wearing braces.
We know that maintaining braces in school is can be tough. That is why we ensure to give you the best plans of action to help you out.
For more questions and inquiries that you may have, we are always at your service. You can always contact Bailey Orthodontics.

Before you reach for that candy cane or toffee this year, Bailey Orthodontics wants you to stop and think about your braces. Just because the holiday season is here, doesn’t mean you should indulge in treats that are harmful to your braces. This Christmas, please remember to review the foods that can damage your braces and do your best to avoid them.
To ensure you don’t have to make an emergency visit to Bailey Orthodontics, please avoid:
Slight damage to braces can happen to the best of us, but it’s important to get them repaired in a timely manner. Your braces can’t efficiently move your teeth if they’re broken, so take note of Bailey Orthodontics holiday hours this season too.
Happy Holidays from Bailey Orthodontics!
To ensure you don’t have to make an emergency visit to Bailey Orthodontics, please avoid:
- Crunchy foods – Crusty breads (like some pizza crusts), pretzels, ice, and chips can all cause wires and brackets to break, so stay away from anything that is too crunchy.
- Hard foods – Before you reach for the veggie plate, cut any hard vegetables into bite sized pieces. Avoid things like nuts, popcorn, hard candies, etc. that can break or bend the brackets or wires.
- Sticky, chewy foods – Caramel, licorice, taffy, toffee, etc. can all pull on your brackets and cause damage.

DIY Orthodontics? Think Again
Bailey Orthodontics and the American Association of Orthodontists have a prompt announcement for consumers about “DIY” orthodontic treatment. It is with great urgency that we emphasize to you all to be cautious about the trending “DIY” orthodontic treatment because straightening your teeth on your own can lead to lifelong dental problems.
Do-It-Yourself videos and websites are popular among today’s culture, and while so many great ideas come from several of these outlets, there are some things that you just shouldn’t do yourself! Straightening your teeth or attempting to move your teeth as a “DIY” project is definitely one of the things you should not be doing. Moving and straightening teeth is a medical procedure that needs to be supervised by an orthodontist. It’s important for you all to be wary of any videos or websites that advise you to use objects such as rubber bands, dental floss, or anything else in order to get straight teeth. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, “Moving teeth without a thorough examination of the overall health of the teeth and gums could result in the permanent loss of teeth, which may result in expensive and lifelong dental problems.”
If you have any further questions regarding “DIY” orthodontics, or are curious about straightening your teeth, please contact us at 623-977-0707.

Tips For Retention
When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. When it comes to caring for your retainer, we're keeping it short, sweet, and simple. The rule of thumb is to wear it at all times, until Dr. Bailey instructs you otherwise. It's important to remember these other tips on retainers too. Check them out now!
- Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it back in its case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
- Clean the retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used but do not take the place of brushing.
- When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in its case. Pets love to chew on them!
- Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to it faster.
- Retainers are breakable, so treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call Bailey Orthodontics immediately.
- If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or you believe it needs adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust it yourself.
- Always bring your retainer to your appointments.
- Retainer replacements are expensive, but with proper care they will last for years!
- Remove your retainer when you go swimming.
- Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.

#BaileyOrthoAZ Q & A
Bailey Orthodontics understands that you may questions regarding orthodontic treatment, and we want to assure you that we have the answers. As we continue to provide the best of services to you, we decided to share some popular questions many of our patients have asked. Expand your knowledge about orthodontics and learn the facts about common treatment questions.
Question: What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Answer:Orthodontic treatment involves the use of braces and other dental technologies to apply precise forces that result in desired re-positioning of the teeth. These changes improve not only the look of your smile, but the health and longevity of your teeth.
Some general dentists take continuing-education seminars in order to offer orthodontic services as a sideline to their primary services. However, with so much riding on the quality of treatment, choosing an orthodontic specialist ensures that you will get the best possible result. Orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate form dental school. And like other medical counterparts, orthodontists limit their practices to their specialty area.
Question: How long do I wear braces?
Answer: Many factors determine the length of treatment, such as the severity of the bite problem, the patient’s response to treatment and the patient’s cooperation during treatment. You may be surprised to hear that age is not a major factor. Although some minor problems may be resolved in less than a year, most orthodontic cases range approximately one to two years for completion.
Question: What is the best age to begin orthodontic treatment?
Answer: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all patients be seen for an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Many severe problems can be prevented from fully developing by initiating early orthodontic treatment (age seven to nine years old). Other than beginning treatment as early as 7, anyone over that age is ready to begin.
Question: Does insurance pay for braces?
Answer: Several patients have orthodontic benefits as a part of their dental plan. Orthodontic insurance generally differs from regular dental insurance in that each insured individual usually has a lifetime maximum benefit for orthodontic treatment. We will be happy to help you with your insurance needs.
Are you ready to get started with orthodontic treatment at Bailey Orthodontics? Call us now at 623-977-0707 and let's get started with your first visit.

Insurance Inquiries
If your insurance features coverage for orthodontic services, you will receive the benefit of reduced personal costs. We will review your insurance to determine the appropriate course of action. Remember that orthodontic insurance is a benefit for you or your child. If, during the course of treatment, your benefits change, the financially responsible party is accountable for all charges.
We are eager to answer any questions you may have regarding your options for payment of services.
Please contact us at Bailey Orthodontics by calling 623-977-0707 for further questions.

Tips For Healthy Resolutions
With the end of the year approaching many of you are
thinking of ideas for your new year resolutions! Some people want to lose
weight, change their style, or pick up a new hobby. Whatever you goal for 2016 may be, almost all
resolutions are typically promises we make to ourselves as an act of
self-improvement for the upcoming year.
For our patients who are vowing to have a bright and healthy smile in
2016, we’ve gathered some quick tips to make caring for your braces a little
easier next year.
Tip # 1 Do Your Part
It’s important to take exceptionally good care of your teeth
throughout orthodontic treatment. You can keep your teeth and gums in the greatest
condition by keeping them clean and making the extra effort to take a little
more time on your dental hygiene routine. Remember, the best result from your
orthodontic treatment is a result of a team effort among your orthodontist and
yourself.
Tip #2 Avoid Plaque
Have you ever noticed a sticky, colorless film developing on
your teeth? That’s called plaque. Plaque
is composed of bacteria, saliva, and food and can form on your teeth or around
your braces. This can cause bad breath, cavities, or swollen gums. Also, plaque
can leave permanent marks on your teeth, which no one ever wants. Be sure you
avoid this by remembering the basics; brush & floss regularly.
Tip #3 Remember the
Basics
We’ve all grown up being told to brush and floss after each
meal from our parents and family dentists; well orthodontists follow the same
rule when it comes to the basics. Be
sure you brush thoroughly after each meal.
Out on the town, or stuck in class? That’s no excuse! Rinse your mouth
with water until you can brush. It’s as easy as that.
Many people have the brushing part down, but tend to leave
flossing out of the equation. Be sure you floss at least once a day; we
recommend every night before bed so you don’t feel rushed. Flossing may seem a
little difficult with braces at first, so don’t forget to use a floss threader
if needed. Also, clean carefully along
and under the gumlines. The more you floss, the more routine it will become.
Be sure you follow Bailey Orthodontics staff’s directions on hygiene to avoid any future troubles that may
arise. Let us know if you have any questions or difficulties at your next
appointment, or give us a call at (623)977-0707.

Best Snack Choices
We know that
getting kids and teens to eat healthy isn’t always an easy task, especially
when they’re busy with school and other activities. And as parents…we’re even
busier. It’s OK to admit that sometimes it’s just easier to grab fast food on
the way home from work or toss our kids a couple bucks to purchase lunch in the
school cafeteria. But proper nutrition not only insures that our kids will grow
into healthy adults, it also insures that the money we spent on their
orthodontic care does not go to waste.
Did you know
that a proper diet provides all the essential nutrients to bones and tissues
undergoing change? So, the healthier you are, the better the results of your
orthodontic treatment.
Knowing
this…we thought we’d pass along five quick, delicious and nutritious snacks
your kids are sure to love.
1. Cheese –
Cheese is one of the healthiest snacks for your child’s teeth. In addition to
providing calcium, cheese also helps fight cavities. According to the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Cheese stimulates the body’s salivary glands to
clear the mouth of debris. This means cheese disrupts the development of
cavities, especially when eaten as a snack or at the end of a meal. Also…the
Calcium and phosphorous found in cheese prevents decreases in the plaque’s ph
level and work to re-mineralize the enamel of your child’s teeth.
2.
Blueberries - Blueberries are loaded with Vitamin C, as well as folic acid,
minerals, fiber and disease-fighting phytochemicals, which have shown to help
prevent cancer and diabetes. Try adding blueberries as a topping to cereal or
even mix them into muffins and pancakes…the kids will love that.
3. Whole
Wheat Bread – Whole wheat bread gives kids their iron, vitamins, magnesium, and
zinc. So instead of making a sandwich on white bread for lunch…use Whole Wheat
Bread instead. It’s a little change that will make a big impact.
4. Oatmeal -
Instead of high-sugar, high-fat options from the grocery store, try baking a
batch of low-fat oatmeal cookies. Raisins, cranberries, dried apricots and nuts
can be great additions to the cookie dough because of their nutritional value
& taste.
5. Yogurt -
Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential
for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Consider Yogurt as an alternative to
ice-cream for dessert. When mixed with berries and granola…yogurt is a tasty
treat.
For more
information about which foods are best for keeping your kids and their teeth

Turkey & Pumpkin Are Healthy Choices For Teeth
It’s pretty safe to say the words Thanksgiving
and Healthy don’t pair up when you think about the delicious foods flowing around
the table on Turkey Day. But, believe it or not, you’ll have reason to
feel less guilty when you indulge in the feast this season because of the
benefits some of these traditional foods will have on your teeth.
At Bailey Orthodontics, we want you to know you
can now be extra thankful for turkey and pumpkin pie!
Turkey
Not only is turkey the main attraction at the
table on Thanksgiving day, but it benefits your body and teeth in several ways
due to the high protein content. Protein helps build strong bones and healthy
teeth; just another reason to keep smiling!
Pumpkin
Not only are pumpkins decorative and delicious,
but they’re filled with magnesium too! Magnesium is a nutrient known for
strengthening teeth. Also, pumpkin pulp is a good source of Vitamin A,
potassium, and fiber, all which help build enamel.
So when it’s time to sink your teeth into your
holiday meal, go ahead and grab a big helping of turkey and an extra slice of
pumpkin pie, as these are great foods in achieving a healthy smile.
