Tips For Healthy Resolutions

With the end of the year approaching many of you are thinking of ideas for your new year resolutions! Some people want to lose weight, change their style, or pick up a new hobby.  Whatever you goal for 2016 may be, almost all resolutions are typically promises we make to ourselves as an act of self-improvement for the upcoming year.  For our patients who are vowing to have a bright and healthy smile in 2016, we’ve gathered some quick tips to make caring for your braces a little easier next year.

Tip # 1 Do Your Part
It’s important to take exceptionally good care of your teeth throughout orthodontic treatment. You can keep your teeth and gums in the greatest condition by keeping them clean and making the extra effort to take a little more time on your dental hygiene routine. Remember, the best result from your orthodontic treatment is a result of a team effort among your orthodontist and yourself.

Tip #2 Avoid Plaque
Have you ever noticed a sticky, colorless film developing on your teeth? That’s called plaque.  Plaque is composed of bacteria, saliva, and food and can form on your teeth or around your braces. This can cause bad breath, cavities, or swollen gums. Also, plaque can leave permanent marks on your teeth, which no one ever wants. Be sure you avoid this by remembering the basics; brush & floss regularly.

Tip #3 Remember the Basics
We’ve all grown up being told to brush and floss after each meal from our parents and family dentists; well orthodontists follow the same rule when it comes to the basics.  Be sure you brush thoroughly after each meal.  Out on the town, or stuck in class? That’s no excuse! Rinse your mouth with water until you can brush. It’s as easy as that.

Many people have the brushing part down, but tend to leave flossing out of the equation. Be sure you floss at least once a day; we recommend every night before bed so you don’t feel rushed. Flossing may seem a little difficult with braces at first, so don’t forget to use a floss threader if needed.  Also, clean carefully along and under the gumlines. The more you floss, the more routine it will become.

Be sure you follow Bailey Orthodontics staff’s directions on hygiene to avoid any future troubles that may arise. Let us know if you have any questions or difficulties at your next appointment, or give us a call at (623)977-0707.

Best Snack Choices

We know that getting kids and teens to eat healthy isn’t always an easy task, especially when they’re busy with school and other activities. And as parents…we’re even busier. It’s OK to admit that sometimes it’s just easier to grab fast food on the way home from work or toss our kids a couple bucks to purchase lunch in the school cafeteria. But proper nutrition not only insures that our kids will grow into healthy adults, it also insures that the money we spent on their orthodontic care does not go to waste.

Did you know that a proper diet provides all the essential nutrients to bones and tissues undergoing change? So, the healthier you are, the better the results of your orthodontic treatment.

Knowing this…we thought we’d pass along five quick, delicious and nutritious snacks your kids are sure to love.

1. Cheese – Cheese is one of the healthiest snacks for your child’s teeth. In addition to providing calcium, cheese also helps fight cavities. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Cheese stimulates the body’s salivary glands to clear the mouth of debris. This means cheese disrupts the development of cavities, especially when eaten as a snack or at the end of a meal. Also…the Calcium and phosphorous found in cheese prevents decreases in the plaque’s ph level and work to re-mineralize the enamel of your child’s teeth.

2. Blueberries - Blueberries are loaded with Vitamin C, as well as folic acid, minerals, fiber and disease-fighting phytochemicals, which have shown to help prevent cancer and diabetes. Try adding blueberries as a topping to cereal or even mix them into muffins and pancakes…the kids will love that.

3. Whole Wheat Bread – Whole wheat bread gives kids their iron, vitamins, magnesium, and zinc. So instead of making a sandwich on white bread for lunch…use Whole Wheat Bread instead. It’s a little change that will make a big impact.

4. Oatmeal - Instead of high-sugar, high-fat options from the grocery store, try baking a batch of low-fat oatmeal cookies. Raisins, cranberries, dried apricots and nuts can be great additions to the cookie dough because of their nutritional value & taste.

5. Yogurt - Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Consider Yogurt as an alternative to ice-cream for dessert. When mixed with berries and granola…yogurt is a tasty treat.

For more information about which foods are best for keeping your kids and their teeth healthy…feel free to give us a call, post a comment here on our blog or ask us on Facebook!

Black Friday Shopping Secrets

Everyone knows the biggest day for the best shopping deals is the day after Thanksgiving! Black Friday has become an unofficial holiday for smart shoppers looking to save on holiday gifts.  If you’re one of those smart shoppers, you’re in luck because we have a few secrets to help you in your hunt for the best deals this year.

Be Prepared
Many stores give early bird Black Friday ads to customers on their email list. Check out your favorite stores online and subscribe to their e-mail list so you can start finding the deals before the stores open!

Get Bonus Discounts
If you get a thrill from shopping at the crack of dawn, you will love the rewards that may come with it. Many stores do giveaways to those who are in line to shop on Black Friday. Last year, Sports Authority gave the first 80 customers to walk in gift cards worth up to $500.

Split Up
It’s fun to shop with family and friends, but with so many deals and so little time you can play it smart by dividing up the shopping. Compare your lists with your closest pals, and split up the stores and items!

Stay Within Your Budget
Make a list of what you need and a set budget on what you have to spend.   Make sure you stay strict to the list and don’t purchase items you don’t need.  Sometimes it’s the things that aren’t on the list that blow your budget.

Turkey & Pumpkin Are Healthy Choices For Teeth

It’s pretty safe to say the words Thanksgiving and Healthy don’t pair up when you think about the delicious foods flowing around the table on Turkey Day.  But, believe it or not, you’ll have reason to feel less guilty when you indulge in the feast this season because of the benefits some of these traditional foods will have on your teeth.

At Bailey Orthodontics, we want you to know you can now be extra thankful for turkey and pumpkin pie!

Turkey
Not only is turkey the main attraction at the table on Thanksgiving day, but it benefits your body and teeth in several ways due to the high protein content. Protein helps build strong bones and healthy teeth; just another reason to keep smiling!

Pumpkin
Not only are pumpkins decorative and delicious, but they’re filled with magnesium too! Magnesium is a nutrient known for strengthening teeth. Also, pumpkin pulp is a good source of Vitamin A, potassium, and fiber, all which help build enamel.

So when it’s time to sink your teeth into your holiday meal, go ahead and grab a big helping of turkey and an extra slice of pumpkin pie, as these are great foods in achieving a healthy smile.

Braces Are Not a DIY Project

You may have already seen the new trend that has taken the internet by storm, but unlike other Do-it-Yourself videos available online…we don’t want you trying this one at home.

DIY Orthodontic Treatment is a dangerous new trend. And while it may be fun to do things on your own, when it comes to the health of your teeth and gums the Do-it-Yourself approach can leave you with very little to smile about.

A series of online videos have appeared showing people how to create their own braces. But what these videos don't show you is that anyone using this quick fix method as an orthodontic solution is putting their teeth, gums and jaw bones at risk for serious damage. Because of the known risks, Dr. Bailey considers the unsupervised movement of teeth to be below the standard of care which can result in permanent tooth loss.

Your teeth are connected to your gums and your blood supply. Trying to move your teeth without the supervision of an orthodontic specialist puts you at risk for infection, tearing of the gums and damaging the attachment between the tooth and gums so the tooth no longer gets the support it needs. Any time a dental procedure is taken on by an untrained, unsupervised individual there is a substantial risk for irreparable damage.

For the health and safety of the public, The American Association of Orthodontists is urging anyone considering any type of teeth straightening procedure to see an orthodontic specialist

Dr. Bailey is a trained, qualified specialist who can diagnose and treat dental and facial irregularities to correctly align teeth and jaws. If you are seeking orthodontic treatment please contact our office and never consider Do-it-Yourself short cuts.

National Brush Day!

It is only right that the day after a sweet treat filled holiday we acknowledge a day dedicated to oral health, National Brush Day.

National Brush Day is November 1st. This day highlights the importance in making sure kids brush for 2 minutes, twice a day (http://2min2x.org/), every day of the year.

Brushing your teeth is the cornerstone of any good oral hygiene routine. It’s recommended to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your toothbrush should fit your mouth and allow you to reach all areas easily. Brushing your teeth braces may take a little more time, but taking the time to carefully brush your teeth is crucial to your oral health while in treatment. The brackets and wires in your mouth create places to trap plaque. Plaque is sticky and made up of food, saliva and lots of bacteria, and when plaque attaches to your braces and teeth, it causes cavities and can permanent stain marks on your teeth. We want to offer you a few tips to make brushing easier for you.

When you brush your teeth, move the brush in small circular motions to reach food particles that may be under your gum line. Hold the toothbrush at an angle and brush slowly and carefully, covering all areas between teeth and the surface of each tooth. It will take you several minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Brush up on the lower teeth, down on the upper teeth and the outside, inside and chewing surface of all of your front and back teeth. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before you rinse.

Brush your teeth four times daily to avoid the accumulation of food particles and plaque:

  •     In the morning after breakfast
  •     After lunch or right after school
  •     After dinner
  •     At bedtime
As soon as the bristles start to wear down or fray, replace your toothbrush with a new one. Do not swallow any toothpaste; rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after you finish brushing. It is important to carefully floss and brush daily for optimal oral hygiene.

If you have any questions about how to properly brush your teeth with your orthodontic appliance please contact our office.

Hey It's National Orthodontic Health Month

It's time to celebrate Orthodontics!

Every year, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recognizes October as a time to raise awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment.

If you have never been to an orthodontist before, you might not know what to expect. Meeting with Dr. Bailey and our staff is a great way to find out what kind of people you’ll be seeing during your treatment. This is also a time to get your questions answered and to learn more about what an orthodontist can do for you and your family.

In a month full of sweet treats, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of your braces and/or your orthodontic appliances. Try to avoid hard and sticky candy. If you can’t keep yourself away from the sugar, choose soft candies that melt-in-your-mouth.As always, remember to brush and floss after eating sugary foods. It only takes several minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Brush up on the lower teeth, down on the upper teeth and the outside, inside and chewing surface of all of your front and back teeth. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before you rinse.

If you have any questions about what foods are best during orthodontic treatment, feel free to ask during your next visit! Healthy teeth and gums mean an amazing smile! We look forward to seeing you and your family this October!

Invisalign Vivera Retainers

Retention is an important phase of the orthodontic treatment process. After we remove your braces the retention stage of treatment begins. During this stage patients must wear a retainer to help retain the beautiful smile you and Dr. Bailey have worked hard to create.

The retention phase focuses on holding your teeth in the position they have been moved to by braces treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. At this time you will have to wear a removable retainer, many of our patients are choosing Vivera Retainers.

What are Vivera Retainers?
Created from the makes of Invisalign, Vivera retainers are custom made clear thermoplastic retainers. The Vivera retainers work for patients who have used Inivisalign or traditional braces. These retainer are made from impressions created from our iTero digital scanner, therefore we know the fit is a perfect match for you.

Vivera Retainers are offered as a set of four custom retainers at a discounted price for patients, other benefits include:

Retainers that are 30% stronger than other clear retainers
Retainers need to be strong enough to maintain tooth position and correct minor relapse if necessary. Our testing shows that the proprietary thermoplastic material in Vivera Retainers is more than 30% stronger than other leading clear retainer materials. In fact, our retainers can self-correct (back to the final retained position) certain types of minor relapse, up to .25mm per tooth.

Retainers that are durable
Vivera lab testing indicates that many leading retainer materials begin to deform after as little as two months of simulated daytime use.  Other retainers aren’t guaranteed to protect your smiles.
Retainers that work with your retention philosophy
Whether you’re prescribed full-time wear, nights only, or a few nights a week, it is important to have the confidence that your retainer is providing consistent working retention. Vivera Retainers come with four custom retainers for four times the retention coverage.

Offers convenience
Vivera Retainers also works well for kids who go between mom and dad’s house. Patients can keep one set at each home, an extra set while traveling, or have a pair simply for peace of mind in case accidents that may occur (Pets love to eat them for some reason). After the 4 retainers have been used more are easily ordered, at an additional cost, without taking new impressions because the scan is saved.

If you have any questions about the retention process or Vivera Retainers contact our office today and we will answer any questions you may have.

Play Hard, Play Smart

Fall sports have kicked off, from grade-school to collegiate and professional sports, and athletes are ready to get physical. If you are taking the field this fall we want you, your teeth and your appliance to be safe. How can you protect your mouth? By wearing a mouth guard.

What is a mouth guard? (source: mouthhealthy.org)
Mouth guards, also called mouth protectors, help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw.

How mouth guards work?
They typically cover the upper teeth and are a great way to protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. Knowing how to prevent injuries like these is especially important if you participate
in organized sports or other recreational activities.

Why should athletes wear mouth guards?
  • A study reported by the American Academy of General Dentistry (AAGD) found that mouth guards prevent more than 200,000 injuries to the mouth and/or teeth each year.
  • Sports-related injuries often end-up in the emergency room; however, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 600,000 of these visits involve injury or damage to the teeth and mouth.
  • It used to be that only males were considered when it came to needing mouth guards. However, recent studies have revealed that the growing interest and participation of females in these same sports and activities makes it just as important for them to protect their teeth.

If you are one of our athlete patients please contact us to find out what type of mouth guard might be right for you and your appliance. If you have any questions about protecting your teeth give us a call and schedule an appointment, for more information about mouth guards visit www.mouthhealthy.org

Our Coolest Tool, The iTero Digital Scanner

One of the most advanced products, and used by our office, is our digital scanner. We utilize a digital scanner that allows us to capture digital images of your teeth and bite rather than using uncomfortable, unpleasant-tasting, messy and sometimes inaccurate impressions. In our office we use the iTero Digital Scanner. "As of March 2015, iTero scans have been used in more than 1.2 million restorative crown, bridge, and custom implant cases and more than 1.3 million iTero orthodontic scans, including more than 600,000 Invisalign® scans" (iTero.com).
Using a digital scanner allows us to create computer generated models of teeth within minutes. Unlike digital techniques, traditional techniques involve using multiple materials and steps. Patients view digital scanning as a much more comfortable process. There is much more room for efficiency and accuracy when using digital scanning. Also, it is possible for the doctor to send impressions to the lab via email rather than sending them through mail.

As stated by yourdentistryguide.com digital scanning benefits include:
Improved image/impression quality for better-fitting restorations
Less chair time
No need for distasteful impression materials that cause some patients to gag
More comfortable, less anxious experience for patients
Reduced possibility of impression-taking errors and elimination of material inaccuracies for fewer restoration mistakes
Patients tend to appreciate the new technology and state-of-the-art dental care, so they become more engaged in, and better informed about, the treatment process because they can see their impressions on-screen chairside.
The scan of the teeth being restored, as well as the opposing teeth and bite, can be completed in
just three to five minutes.
The digital impression can be stored electronically indefinitely, which saves space, contributes to efficient recordkeeping, and supports a paper-free environment.
Green dentistry and eco-friendly aspects include eliminating the need for disposable plastic trays and impression materials, which otherwise would be polluting landfill space; digital data is eliminated with the "delete" button.

To learn more about the technology and techniques used in our office call us today and schedule an appointment.

What's The Deal With Invisalign?

Dr. Spencer S. Bailey and his knowledgeable staff look forward to helping you and your family achieve beautiful, healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. Bailey Orthodontics offers many solutions to suit your personal needs.

One option we offer is the Invisalign System, a series of clear overlay templates—called aligners—that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. Most people are use to traditional metal braces and have reservations about choosing Invisalign. Here are a few answers to common concerns about Invisalign.

There will be some pressure and minor discomfort for a day or two after each initial insertion. This is a sign that your teeth are moving sequentially into their final position

Like any orthodontic treatment, there is a short adjustment period. The more you speak with the aligners on, the quicker you will adjust.

Treatment time varies depending on the severity of the misaligned teeth. Treatment time can be shorter than traditional braces, between six and 18 months.

No. Unlike braces, you may eat whatever you like as long as you remove the aligners before eating. Prior to placing the aligners back on, it is important to brush your teeth and the aligners after you eat.

Because medical benefits differ significantly from policy to policy, you should review your personal coverage plan. However, in general, if a patient has orthodontic coverage, Invisalign should be covered to the same extent as conventional braces.

The Invisalign system is available to adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems. Ask us if you are a candidate for the Invisalign system.

Pool Party Donation Drive

During Dr. Bailey's Annual Pool Party on August 7th we will be taking donations for one of our favorite charities, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix.

Dr. Spencer Bailey

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix is a welcoming “home away from home” for families with children facing medical challenges, providing an atmosphere of comfort, hope and courage. There are three houses in the Valley to help families.

Ronald McDonald House of Phoenix (RMHC) is truly “the House that Love Built,” thanks to the outstanding commitment of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” Through the generous support of our community, RMHC has been able to serve more than 37,000 families since 1985. The families who benefit from RMHC travel far from home to receive treatment for their child at world-renowned pediatric centers located in Phoenix. Their child’s treatment may last a day, a month, or even longer. It’s a long time to be away from home or to divide a family, and often times commuting or staying at a hotel is either impossible or financially challenging for a family. RMHC is able to help families overcome these obstacles by providing low-cost, temporary housing that is near their child’s hospital. (source: www.rmhcphoenix.com/ronald-mcdonald-house)

In the past we have made it a point to help contribute to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix and we are asking that you join just once again in giving back to the community. During our annual pool party we will be hosting a donation drive collecting items for the Ronal McDonald House.

Here is a list of recommended items:

  • Snack bars
  • Fruit snacks
  • Instant oatmeal packs
  • Soup bowls
  • Spoons
  • Pillows (standard)
  • All Purpose Cleaner
  • Nylon Mesh Laundry Bags 2ftx3ft

We are asking that when you come out to enjoy the pool party you please try to bring at least one of these items. All items donated must be new, for any questions regarding the annual pool party or our donation drive contact our office. Can't wait to see you there!

What Toothpaste is Best For Your Teeth?

Toothpaste serves a vital component to oral hygiene. It is recommended that you brush your teeth four time a day and what do you need to brush your teeth ? (other than a toothbrush) TOOTHPASTE!

While shopping we're sure you have noticed that there are many different types of toothpaste available from different brands all promising different results. So how do you pick a toothpaste, well it all depends on what your teeth need.

Types of toothpaste:

Anti-decay toothpaste

They contain Fluoride Compounds such as Sodium Fluoride , Stannous Fluoride, or Monofluorophosphate.  If the fluoride content is 1,000 ppm (parts per million) or above. they are all effective in preventing tooth decay.  Children toothpaste contains 500ppm fluoride and is usually flavoured, e.g. fruit flavour, candy flavour, which is more appealing to children.

Desensitizing toothpaste

The active ingredients provide relief from dentine hypersensitivity symptoms in 2 ways.  First, they interrupt the neurone response to pain stimuli; second, they occlude the dentinal tubules of dentine. There are many different types of desensitizing toothpastes marketed by different brand names. Their various functions on different active ingredients they contain. Therefore, you are advised to consult the dentist and undergo a thorough check-up to explore the cause of tooth sensitivity before using desensitizing toothpaste

Anti-plaque toothpaste

This kind of toothpaste inhibits plaque accumulation, reduces the toxic effects of the bacterial toxin on the tooth surrounding tissues, thereby reduces the chances of getting gum disease. In the market, different anti-plaque toothpastes contain different active ingredients. For example, Triclosan or Zinc Citrate.

Whitening toothpaste

This kind of toothpaste contains relatively coarse abrasives which function by abrading the stains on the tooth surface, giving a whitening effect.

Natural toothpaste

Natural toothpaste is that it does not contain artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors. Instead, it uses natural ingredients such as xylitol and stevia for sweetness, herbs, fruits and spices for flavor and naturally occurring titanium dioxide for a white color. They may or may not contain fluorides and some of the surfactants found in conventional toothpastes.

If you need help choosing which toothpaste is best for you please consult with us or your dentist during your next check-up.

Tips For Cleaning Your Retainers

After you remove your braces we know you want to focus on making sure you keep your new beautiful smile is nice and clean, but don’t forget about your appliance that keep that beautiful smile, your retainers.

When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. Your retainers should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. Also, just like you are keeping up the oral hygiene you must make sure your retainer is clean as well. Here are a few tips for keeping your retainer clean.

Bailey Orthodontics

  • Use your toothbrush to brush your retainers regularly. Since they spend a lot of time in your mouth, tartar and plaque can still develop on these appliances. Brushing keeps tartar buildup away.
  • Soak your retainers in distilled water with a little baking soda to keep them clean and eliminate odor. Baking soda is a natural means of cleaning and deodorizing them
  • Use a denture cleaning solution, such as Efferdent, will aid in the removal of plaque and tartar. Be sure to rinse the retainers thoroughly after cleaning to remove any cleanser residue.
  • Retainers are made of a thermoplastic material that is sensitive to excessive heat, so they should be kept away from dishwashers (and basically any place where the temperatures exceed 115 degrees(F)).

Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. If you have any questions about the retention process or your retainer, contact us today!
