Holiday Foods To Avoid With Braces

The holiday season is here and before you know it, holiday parties and family gatherings will soon be upon us! With winter holidays come favorite winter treats we eagerly await year after year. Before you reach for that candy cane or toffee this year, Bailey Orthodontics wants you to stop and think about your braces. Just because the holiday season is here, doesn’t mean you should indulge in treats that are harmful to your braces. This Christmas, please remember to review the foods that can damage your braces and do your best to avoid them.

To ensure you don’t have to make an emergency visit to Bailey Orthodontics, please avoid:
  1. Crunchy foods – Crusty breads (like some pizza crusts), pretzels, ice, and chips can all cause wires and brackets to break, so stay away from anything that is too crunchy.
  2. Hard foods – Before you reach for the veggie plate, cut any hard vegetables into bite sized pieces. Avoid things like nuts, popcorn, hard candies, etc. that can break or bend the brackets or wires.
  3. Sticky, chewy foods – Caramel, licorice, taffy, toffee, etc. can all pull on your brackets and cause damage.
Feeling a little down about missing out on some of your favorite holiday foods? We have good news; there are still plenty of treats and holiday foods that you can enjoy. Soft foods such as puddings, ice cream, pies, and cakes as well as mashed potatoes and dinner rolls, are just a few holiday favorites that are A-OK!

Slight damage to braces can happen to the best of us, but it’s important to get them repaired in a timely manner. Your braces can’t efficiently move your teeth if they’re broken, so take note of Bailey Orthodontics holiday hours this season too.

Happy Holidays from Bailey Orthodontics!

Which Mouthwash Should You Use

The process of using mouthwash seems pretty simple: swish, gargle and spit. But, what most people misunderstand is not all mouthwash is created equal. In fact, do you know if you’re using the right kind of mouthwash while being treated at Bailey Orthodontics?

Mouthwash is used for a variety of reasons. Check out those reasons right here:
  1. · freshen your breath,
  2. · helps to prevent dental decay,
  3. · reduce the amount of plaque, or
  4. · to prevent or reduce gingivitis (an early stage of gum disease)
Even though there are basic ingredients in a mouthwash (water, cleansing agents, flavoring ingredients, etc.) they tend to differ with their active ingredients. Again, not all mouthwash is created equal.

The main types of mouth rinses are:
  • Odor neutralizers
  • Antibacterial mouthwash
  • Fluoride mouthwash
If you have any questions make sure to ask us the next time you’re in for an appointment. We can help guide you when deciding what kind of mouthwash will be best for your particular oral health. Also, remember, although it can become part of your daily oral hygiene regime, mouthwash is not a substitute for brushing or flossing.

Beverages That Are Bad For Braces

When being treated at Bailey Orthodontics, patients are encouraged to make necessary to make diet modifications to protect the braces and to ensure the health of the tissues in the mouth. It is advised by Dr. Bailey to avoid or completely eliminate a list of beverages during treatment for this reason.

Drinks suggestive of causing dental decay by your dentist should be restricted while having braces on. This includes drinks high in sugar and acid. If high sugary food is to be consumed, it is limited to meal times or once in a day. The mouth produces more saliva during meals which, in turn help to neutralize the acids and rinse food from mouth. In between snacks should be confined to those without refined sugar and avoided if possible.
  • Fizzy/ soft drinks – sodas especially cola
  • Sports drinks – isotonic and energy drinks
  • Fruit juices – lemon juice has citric acid
  • Sweetened liquids – syrup and honey
What drinks are safe?
Water from the tap is proven to be the best. It is a natural source and is rich in fluoride. 6-8 glasses of water per day will keep you away from sugary drinks and fatty foods high in sugar. It helps to wash away food coloring and chemicals and sugars consumed from soda. This feature is absent with mineral water. Milk is another alternative, low in sugar and acids, with an added benefit high in calcium, keeping your teeth and bone strong and healthy. Drinks like 7up do not have these acids.

Are You A Candidate for Orthodontic Treatment?

It is truly never too late to get treated by Bailey Orthodontics. If you’ve still have teeth, we can straighten them! Certainly, there are age-related changes that affect the way treatment proceeds. Restorative needs, periodontal concerns, and others necessitate a full diagnosis and discussion of your needs. Don’t wait! Enjoy the benefits of a healthy, pleasing smile for the rest of your life!

Are you a candidate for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontics is not merely for improving the aesthetics of the smile; orthodontic treatment improves bad bites (malocclusions). Malocclusions occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth or feel about your smile.

A large percentage of our patients are adults, and they agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Your Investment Is An Opportunity

We don't need to tell you smoking is bad for your lungs, the word on that has been out for years. Besides the link between tobacco and heart disease, stroke, emphysema, and cancer, smoking can lead to oral health problems. It's our job to inform you of problems that may arise when you wear braces and smoke.
The following oral health problems that can follow from smoking are:

Bad breath – when you have braces, there are just more areas for bacteria. Smoking with braces often leads to more severe odor.

Tooth discoloration
– smoking stains your teeth – when you have braces it is harder to brush increasing the likelihood of obvious tooth discoloration following the removal of your braces.

Inflammation of the salivary gland openings on the roof of the mouth

Increased loss of bone within the jaw – which can compromise your treatment time.Increased risk of developing gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss

Delayed healing process – making mouth ulcers more painful and longer to heal.

Use your decision to invest in braces as an opportunity to quit smoking. There are plenty of resources and support groups out there willing to help. If you have any questions on oral health problems that can occur, contact Bailey Orthodontics. We are always happy to answer your questions.

DIY: Braces Travel Kit

If you are wearing braces and are planning a vacation, our team at Bailey Orthodontics would suggest that you be prepared. We put together a list of items that will be handy to have with you at all times while you are out of town.

DIY Braces Travel Kit includes:
  • Toothpick, flosspick, or other interdental cleaners
  • Travel toothbrush
  • A water bottle or a mini bottle of mouth rinse
  • Orthodontic wax to help with discomfort from protruding wires
  • A small mirror for examining any possible issues in your mouth
Putting these items together in a “braces travel kit” may be wise. You may even buy pre-made braces kits. Please ask us for more information.

If you happen to be on vacation and experience problems reaching our office, we suggest going online and searching for orthodontic practices in the area you are visiting. Most orthodontists will lend a helping hand to another orthodontic patient and get him or her out of pain or discomfort.

We also suggest avoiding the following foods to prevent broken brackets and/or wire distortion while you are on vacation:
  • Chewy, sticky, or gummy food
  • Apples, pears, and other whole fruits (cut fruit into wedges before consuming)
  • Bagels and hard rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hard candies
  • Hard cookies or pretzels
  • All varieties of nuts, including peanuts, almonds, and cashews
Finally, if you are wearing clear aligners and happen to lose your tray, don’t worry! Simply put in either the previous tray or the next tray and contact us as soon as you get home!
Please give us a call if you have any questions!

Try This New Braces Friendly Nutella Brownie Fruit Pizza

Whether you're new to wearing braces or have had them for a while, you probably noticed that certain foods are hard to enjoy while being treated for orthodontics. Instead of loading up a list of things you can't eat, we suggest creating a list of new foods and recipes you can eat. This makes wearing braces a pleasurable experience that will leave your smile, and your tummy, very happy!

To help you start this positive orthodontic experience Bailey Orthodontics found a new recipe that is braces friendly and taste buds approved! Check it out below.

NUTELLA BROWNIE FRUIT PIZZA
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Blueberries
  • 1 cup Raspberries
  • 1/2 cups Strawberries
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 1 tbsp Strawberry jam
  • 1 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate or chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 tsp Corn starch
  • 2 9/16 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 8oz pkg Chocolate cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp Milk
  • 1/2 cup Water
For the crust:
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 14-16” pizza pan or line with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine butter and sugar with a whisk until smooth, 1-2 minutes. Add vanilla and eggs and whisk until smooth.
  • Add flour, cocoa powder and salt and stir just until smooth. (batter will be somewhat thick)
  • Spread a thin layer of brownie batter on the bottom of the pan. You should have about ½” of brownie batter on the pan. Spread remaining batter into an 8x8” pan and bake alongside.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, until set and a toothpick comes out clean or with moist crumbs. Cool completely (can be made ahead and frozen).
For the “sauce”:
  • With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and Nutella until smooth.
For the glaze:
  • In a small pot, combine water, corn starch and sugar with a whisk. Heat over medium heat, whisking, until sugar and corn starch are dissolved. Stir in jam, and continue cooking and whisking until thickened. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
To assemble:
  • Spread “sauce” over brownie crust. Layer with strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Brush berries with glaze.
  • Melt together chocolate and milk in a small pot on low heat. Drizzle over finished pizza.
  • Store in the refrigerator, uncovered, up to a few hours. To store longer than that, we recommend freezing the crust (with the sauce on it if you desire), then thawing and topping before serving.

DIY Orthodontics? Think Again

Bailey Orthodontics and the American Association of Orthodontists have a prompt announcement for consumers about “DIY” orthodontic treatment. It is with great urgency that we emphasize to you all to be cautious about the trending “DIY” orthodontic treatment because straightening your teeth on your own can lead to lifelong dental problems.

Do-It-Yourself videos and websites are popular among today’s culture, and while so many great ideas come from several of these outlets, there are some things that you just shouldn’t do yourself! Straightening your teeth or attempting to move your teeth as a “DIY” project is definitely one of the things you should not be doing. Moving and straightening teeth is a medical procedure that needs to be supervised by an orthodontist. It’s important for you all to be wary of any videos or websites that advise you to use objects such as rubber bands, dental floss, or anything else in order to get straight teeth. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, “Moving teeth without a thorough examination of the overall health of the teeth and gums could result in the permanent loss of teeth, which may result in expensive and lifelong dental problems.”

If you have any further questions regarding “DIY” orthodontics, or are curious about straightening your teeth, please contact us at 623-977-0707.

National Senior Health and Fitness day

Today is National Senior Health and Fitness day so we want to remind you seniors to put your sneakers on! Every year on the last Wednesday in May, it is estimated that 100,000 senior adults participate in health and fitness activities put on by several organizations nationwide. As we encourage senior citizens to be active today, we also want to remind you to stay current on your health visits and check-ups. This includes dental and orthodontics.

Are you a senior who has considered orthodontic treatment? You may be surprised to know that seniors can benefit from adult braces.Keep reading to find out more.

If you are retired and considering adult braces in the Surprise, Waddell, Phoenix, Peoria, Glendale, El Mirage, Buckeye, Verrado, Wickenburg, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Wittman and Avondale areas , we encourage you to visit Bailey Orthodontics. You may not be aware but retirement age is the perfect time to do things you’ve always wanted to do, including getting braces. If your smile has been something that’s bothered you throughout the years, the time to change that is now.

When you compare getting braces as an adult to getting them as a child or adolescent, there are benefits. One example is children typically must use metal braces due to restrictions and the simple fact that a child’s jaw hasn’t solidified. When you’re an adult, you have a much wider variety of treatment options from traditional braces to clear aligners.

If you are a senior and you’re interested in straightening your teeth, visit our office for a consultation to discuss adult braces. At Bailey Orthodontics, we can help you understand all of the benefits that you will take away, aside from a picture perfect smile.

Braces For Adults

If you think braces are for kids and teens, you’re wrong. Everyday adults are getting braces for various reasons regarding their oral health.

Keep reading to find out some of the top reasons adults should get braces.

1. Teeth can move at any age, even if they’re healthy or if you’ve had braces before.

2. Misaligned teeth can contribute to serious health problems for your teeth and mouth.

3. Not correcting your teeth can lead to other health concerns as well, such as headaches, ear pain, and stomach issues.

4. The braces that are available today are not like the braces of the past. Now, the options are lighter, more comfortable, cheaper, and less noticeable.

5. Maybe your parents couldn’t afford braces. But now there are more options paying for braces, so don’t let the cost hold you back.

6. People are living longer and keeping their teeth for life. Getting braces, even if you are a senior adult, now makes much more sense.

Are you ready to start your journey to a better and healthier smile? Contact Bailey Orthodontics today to setup your consultation and let us show you what braces options are right for you as an adult.
It’s never too late to have a smile you love.

Tips For Retention

When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. When it comes to caring for your retainer, we're keeping it short, sweet, and simple. The rule of thumb is to wear it at all times, until Dr. Bailey instructs you otherwise. It's important to remember these other tips on retainers too. Check them out now!
  • Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it back in its case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
  • Clean the retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used but do not take the place of brushing.
  • When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in its case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to it faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call Bailey Orthodontics immediately.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or you believe it needs adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust it yourself.
  • Always bring your retainer to your appointments.
  • Retainer replacements are expensive, but with proper care they will last for years!
  • Remove your retainer when you go swimming.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
For more information, or general questions, call Bailey Orthodontics at 623-977-0707.

It's Hug A G.I. Day

Every year on March 4th we recognize National Hug A G.I. Day. G.I. is a well know term referring to those serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. Sometime during World War 1, the initials G.I. referred to soldiers in short for “Government Issue” or “General Issue;” followed by the birth of the G.I. Joe comic strip issued in Yank magazine on June 17, 1942.

Around 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill that became known as the G.I. Bill; Servicemen’s Readjustment Act. From there, there was no straying away from the initials as Hasbro trademarked their G.I. Joe action figure based off the comic strip in the 60’s.

To recognize our brave soldiers, National Hug A G.I. Day was created to show thanks for their dedication and bravery. Do you know a G.I. ? If so,  Bailey Orthodontics encourages you to be sure to take a moment to give them a hug and say thank you today! Don’t forget to post a picture & tag us in it if you do! Won’t be able to see the G.I. you know in person? That’s ok! Send him or her a virtual hug via email or text!

#BaileyOrthoAZ Q & A

Bailey Orthodontics understands that you may questions regarding orthodontic treatment, and we want to assure you that we have the answers. As we continue to provide the best of services to you, we decided to share some popular questions many of our patients have asked. Expand your knowledge about orthodontics and learn the facts about common treatment questions.

Question: What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

Answer:Orthodontic treatment involves the use of braces and other dental technologies to apply precise forces that result in desired re-positioning of the teeth. These changes improve not only the look of your smile, but the health and longevity of your teeth.

Some general dentists take continuing-education seminars in order to offer orthodontic services as a sideline to their primary services. However, with so much riding on the quality of treatment, choosing an orthodontic specialist ensures that you will get the best possible result. Orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate form dental school. And like other medical counterparts, orthodontists limit their practices to their specialty area.

Question: How long do I wear braces?

Answer: Many factors determine the length of treatment, such as the severity of the bite problem, the patient’s response to treatment and the patient’s cooperation during treatment. You may be surprised to hear that age is not a major factor. Although some minor problems may be resolved in less than a year, most orthodontic cases range approximately one to two years for completion.

Question: What is the best age to begin orthodontic treatment?

Answer:  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all patients be seen for an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Many severe problems can be prevented from fully developing by initiating early orthodontic treatment (age seven to nine years old). Other than beginning treatment as early as 7, anyone over that age is ready to begin.

Question: Does insurance pay for braces?

Answer: Several patients have orthodontic benefits as a part of their dental plan. Orthodontic insurance generally differs from regular dental insurance in that each insured individual usually has a lifetime maximum benefit for orthodontic treatment. We will be happy to help you with your insurance needs.

Celebrate National Children's Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! This is the perfect opportunity to teach children the importance of oral health habits and proper techniques of taking care of their teeth, gums, and mouth. Did you know in the United States alone 51 million hours of school is missed by American students due to oral health problems? That’s why it’s so important to emphasize the recognition of this specified national month, because every hour of school that is missed creates more problems for children in the classroom. This is why Bailey Orthodontics encourages you to utilize this month to remind your kids about dental health.

Help your children have knowledge in dental health with these creative ways to make it fun.

Special Toothpaste

Most elementary school aged children aren’t concerned with having minty fresh breath, that’s why the ADA has approved so many fun flavored toothpastes. Almost all kids look forward to cleaning their teeth with fun flavors that fit their taste buds a little better. Some popular flavors are watermelon and strawberry, but there is a great variety to choose from!

Fun Toothbrushes

Another way to make dental health more interesting for children is to opt for fun style toothbrush. When replacing their toothbrush, let them pick one in their favorite color or with their favorite character. Also, a new toothbrush option that is growing pretty rapidly is the gaming toothbrush, such as the Grush. The “Grush” takes brushing to another level. This toothbrush is coupled with interactive and instructive mobile games guiding kids’ through proper brushing techniques while they think they are simply playing a game. These brushes also provide tracking for parents to see growth in results.

Create Memories

Show your children that taking care of their dental health is fun and memorable by adding a little flare to it. Brush and floss with them, sing songs, and help them brush while encouraging them to learn the proper skills. Also, there are several fun books and videos designed specifically for children to learn about dental health. Read to them and watch educational videos together. These efforts alone will provide great oral health habits with your children and long lasting memories.

Let us know some of your own personal tricks and tips you use when teaching your children about dental health. Leave a comment or post on our facebook page!
